ARTIST STATEMENT
I am a self-taught portrait artist, compelled to celebrate humanity, in a world that is becoming less sensitive to the human condition. I explore the theme in my paintings, using my work as a positive platform to communicate emotions and personality. I have learned to rely on the skill of listening to and trusting my inner voice to guide my visual expressions. My color choices exude vibrancy – a true reflection of my Jamaican culture– and relays the passion and the inner strength of the subjects I paint. The body of my artwork captures the candid nature of women and children, conveying messages of optimism, positivity, and hope. I place an emphasis on the intensity in the subjects’ eyes, making them a focal point, creating a bond between viewer and subject by evoking feelings of familiarity and endearment. If I can elicit a feeling of familiarity, togetherness, or warmth, then I have done justice to the piece.
